Luke 11:11-13 — “If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? …Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?…” In these familiar verses, Jesus encourages His disciples to pray by emphasising the loving heart of their Heavenly Father. If they were inclined to bless their children, how much more is He inclined to bless His children!
Generally speaking, Christians profess to believe that God is good and that God loves them, and yet there are some who don’t expect to receive good things from His hand. They see the Father as one who is stern and severe. They believe they have to merit His favour. This flies in the face of what Jesus taught in this text, and it’s out of step with the Gospel. Because we come to our Father in Christ we should never expect a scorpion.
