Psalm 62:2 — “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” David penned these words during one of the most difficult seasons of his life. He’d been forced to flee from Jerusalem by his own son Absalom. He surely felt a deep sense of betrayal mixed with fear and uncertainty about the future.
This is a text of Scripture we readily identify with. We all know what it’s like to be overwhelmed by circumstances and by our own feelings. Sometimes it’s grief that does this to us, or frustration, or doubt, or just the busyness of our lives. If we’re a Christian we also know, like David did, that there is a rock that is higher than ourselves – a place of comfort, peace and safety and we too need to pray that God would lead us there.
