The Central Sanctuary

Deuteronomy 12:1-28 — “There shall be a place which the LORD your God shall choose to cause his name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you…” When Israel took possession of its Promised Land, the LORD would choose a place where He would dwell and that was where Israel was to worship. They were not to offer sacrifices or bring their tithes anywhere else. Unlike the Canaanites, whose altars and shrines dotted the landscape, Israel was to have one central sanctuary.

In this study, we think about why God insisted on having one place of worship. We think about the benefits it brought to Israel and what this law has to teach us about the worship of God’s people today. Under the New Covenant, some things have changed and some things have stayed the same.
