Revelation 2:1-7 — “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” The church at Ephesus was highly commendable in many ways. The congregation were doing a lot of things well, but there was one critical problem. A problem that cast a pall over everything else they did. Their love for Jesus had waned, and unless this was reversed, judgement was going to fall.
This is a problem that afflicts many churches and many Christians, especially those with a high view of Scripture and a serious commitment to doctrinal orthodoxy and ministry endeavour. In this sermon we are challenged about this fatal flaw and reminded of what we need to do in order to maintain a vibrant and warm love for Christ.
