Luke 11:37-41 — “Did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?” Jesus had kindly accepted an invitation to a meal in the home of a Pharisee. When He did not wash his hands before eating, the Pharisee was amazed. This washing was not for hygienic purposes, but was a ceremonial washing practiced by the Pharisees and other very devout Jews. Jesus intentionally failed to wash his hands so that He might have the opportunity to speak truth to the Pharisee that he desperately needed to hear.
The Pharisees were highly concerned about outward observance, but inwardly they were full of sin. This is a problem that can plague the true disciples of Jesus as well. We can be one thing on the outside, but something very different on the inside. We need to be careful to attend to our inner life — careful to keep our hearts warm for Jesus.
