Judges 6:1-16 — Sadly, it is a familiar refrain in the Book of Judges. The Children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, so the LORD delivered them into the hands of their enemies. On this occasion the enemy was the Midianites, a nomadic people who came into the Promised Land and took away almost everything leaving Israel “greatly impoverished.” In their distress the people cried out to the LORD, but before he sent a judge to rescue them He sent a prophet to teach them.
The Word of God first came to Israel by the mouth of a prophet and then it came to Gideon by the mouth of an angel – the angel who is the LORD. Gideon was called to deliver Israel from their oppressors.
In this sermon we consider the Word that was given and why it was given. We discover that the Word of God comes to us to accomplish the very same purposes. Will we receive it and what will we do?
