Colossians 3:19 — “Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.” This was a very unusual command in the Greco-Roman world of the First Century. Pederasty and prostitution flourished in these ancient societies. It was not uncommon for a man to have a wife but also to engage in these sexual practices. So this command was actually quite radical. A Christian husband was required to be faithful to his wife and even to love her!
Sadly, the Christian sexual ethic is increasingly becoming unusual today, as is the Christian idea of love in marriage. In this lesson we consider what it means for a husband to “love his wife” and why husbands are often prone to becoming bitter. We hope this is helpful.
