II Kings 2:9-22 — “And Elisha said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him.” The city of Jericho was situated in a beautiful place, but it had a major problem. The water was bad and the land had become barren. The men of the city turned to Elisha for help. He asked for salt to be put in a new cruse (jar) and he poured that salt in the spring that fed the city’s water supply and the water was healed.
In this little story in our Old Testament we have a picture of our own city and the people who live in it. We are reminded of what their greatest problem is and what alone can fix it. We’re encouraged to go out with the salt of the Gospel in the new year that is about to start.
