Luke 9:18-22 — “Whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.” Peter’s confession is the foundation of the church. If a person doesn’t share Peter’s belief concerning the identity of Jesus then they cannot call themself a Christian! But what exactly did Peter mean when He said this? What did Peter understand by the title “Christ?” And furthermore, why did Jesus immediately command the disciples not to tell anyone?
In this sermon we endeavour to understand Peter’s famous confession in its context and that means going back into the Old Testament. When we do, we’re able to make sense of what Jesus went on to say about His suffering and death. It was vital that the disciples properly understood who Jesus was and what He had come to do.
